You might be sceptical about the topic, but if you’re following the rapidly evolving landscape of Generative AI (GenAI), you’ll want to keep reading. Recently, Eric Schmidt made headlines with a candid discussion at Stanford university. While much of the commentary focused on his controversial advice on how to “steal TikTok,” I believe his other insights into the potential near-term dynamics of AI are far too important to overlook.
One mistake of my youth was not paying enough attention to what the wealthy and powerful say. It’s always better when influential figures openly share their thoughts rather than quietly plotting behind the scenes. The interview was made private on the university YouTube channel in less than 24 hours. Why the Impact of Generative AI Could Surpass Even the Profound — and Often Troubling — Effects of Social Media Technology
Eric Schmidt defines AI as “systems that can learn” — a simple yet powerful perspective that sets the stage for understanding its transformative potential. Over the past two decades, social media has revolutionised the way we communicate and interact. However, products built on Generative AI are poised to have an even greater impact due to three key factors:
- Large Context Windows: AI models are advancing to process over 10 million tokens, allowing for deeper, more nuanced understanding and engagement.
- Agentic Workflows: The emergence of intelligent agents will enable automated and adaptive processes across various industries.
- Text-to-Action Capabilities: Imagine a scenario where a wish expressed in natural language is directly translated into a digital command (likely in Python). This would mean that everyone could essentially have a “non-arrogant programmer” at their service, seamlessly executing tasks.
Why NVIDIA Stands Apart in the AI Arms Race
Ever wondered why NVIDIA’s market capitalization hovers around $3 trillion, while other chip manufacturers are struggling to keep up? Schmidt points to NVIDIA’s unique moat — CUDA and a suite of open-source libraries highly optimised for it, like vLLM. No other company is as prepared as NVIDIA to support another wave of frontier model upgrades in AI.
Scaling Laws and the Future of AI Models
What do we mean by “another round” of upgrades? It comes down to scaling laws for Large Language Models (LLMs), which indicate that as you scale up model size (parameters), compute power (FLOPs), and data size, performance improves. These principles, first introduced in the Kaplan 2020 paper and supported by DeepMind’s Chinchilla model, were recently underscored in a Situational Awareness memo by L. Aschenbrenner. For the next frontier models to scale, massive data, compute power, and funding (likely tens, if not hundreds, of billions of USD) are required. Only a few nations with substantial government backing can realistically pursue this path.
Are We on the Brink of Sovereign AI?
Schmidt poses a thought-provoking question: Are we moving towards the era of sovereign AI? To qualify, a country would need deep financial resources, a wealth of talent, a strong educational system, and the will to lead. Reasons for investing in such a project could range from achieving knowledge supremacy and enhancing national security to establishing technological and economic dominance.
The U.S. government, for example, seems to have embraced this idea. While there are significant challenges, like sourcing the immense amount of electricity required — possibly in collaboration with Canada on hydropower generation — these obstacles don’t appear insurmountable.
What Does This Mean for You?
Whether you’re planning your next steps in education, skill development, career change, or deciding where to invest your time and resources, the trajectory of AI development will undoubtedly shape your path. If scaling laws continue to hold, we, as professionals who value critical thinking and personal agency, could find ourselves in a difficult position. Scaling Large Language Models (LLMs) function like capitalism, leveraging capital to achieve economies of scale. Model owners could deploy millions of AI workers with PhD-level intelligence, potentially driving not only small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) but all non-Big Tech businesses to the brink of extinction. While this scenario may sound dystopian for now, it explains why some, like Goldman Sachs analysts and anti-AI advocates, are ready to declare the end of the AI hype.
However, if scaling laws are not validated in the next 2–4 years, agents with text-to-action capabilities could reshape the jobs and businesses we manage. In this case, I don’t foresee the typical capitalistic replacement of labor with capital. Instead, we may experience a renaissance of talent, where investing in human expertise offers a better return on investment than “not-so-smart” capital. CxO roles may remain safe for now, as key stakeholders might not yet be ready to entrust these positions to AI products. However, what won’t be tolerated is a slow pace in automating specific tasks or achieving significant cost reductions.
No, for you personally?
To avoid sounding overly optimistic, let’s look at my role as a CTO. Over the next 12 to 18 months, agentic workflows and text-to-action capabilities could significantly transform (if not fully automate) data-driven tasks for CTOs, such as software development, system monitoring, and cybersecurity threat detection. These advancements can lead to more efficient operations and faster, more informed decision-making. AI-powered systems like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), LLM-based SQL queries, and coding environments like Claude Artifacts enable rapid prototyping, efficient data integration, and seamless automation of complex tasks. Platforms like Gradio further enhance this by enabling compelling, interactive Proof of Concept (PoC) presentations that drive stakeholder engagement and support decision-making.
Nonetheless, strategic leadership, team building, stakeholder alignment, and navigating complex ethical and regulatory challenges will remain fundamentally human-centred tasks — requiring judgement, creativity, and emotional intelligence that AI has yet to replicate.
Adapting to AI’s Transformative Power
To summarise the words of another Eric — Erik Brynjolfsson, who hosted the interview with Eric Schmidt — the transformative power of technologies like electricity lies in the complementary innovations they enable. When electricity was first introduced in factories, it didn’t immediately boost productivity because factories still used layouts designed for steam engines. It took 30 years and a shift to decentralised “unit drive” systems, which allowed for new factory designs like assembly lines, to achieve significant productivity gains. This demonstrates that the real value of a technology often comes from rethinking processes and structures rather than merely retrofitting existing ones. Similarly, AI’s true potential will be realised through new business models and organisational innovations, not by simply applying it to current frameworks.
